The optical model, and its applications to elastic, inelastic and transfer reactions is reviewed. The applicability of the optical model to the collisions of exotic nuclei is discussed. The sensitivity of recent experimental data of elastic scattering of 6He on 208Pb to the characteristics of the optical potential is investigated.
