We will discuss some specific applications to the rotation state and the shapes of moderately large asteroids, and techniques of observations putting some emphasis on the HST/FGS instrument.

The Gaia space mission to be operated in early 2012 by the European Space Agency (ESA), will make a huge step in our knowledge of the Sun's neighbor-hood, up to the Magellanic clouds. Somewhat closer, Gaia will also provide ma jor improvements in the science of asteroids, and more generally to our Solar System, either directly or indirectly....

Context. Sparse photometric data can be used to determine the spin properties and infer information about the shapes of asteroids. The algorithm adopted for the inversion of Gaia photometric data assumes, for the sake of simplicity and to minimize CPU execution time, that the objects have triaxial ellipsoid shapes. In the past, this algorithm...

At the beginning of the Gaia mission, it will be necessary to calibrate the 3 instruments, and to have data for performance check. A particular scanning mode will be used, allowing quick multiple observations over a small number of sources. This mode and the selection of corresponding sources are described.

Asteroid shapes and satellites: role of gravitational reaccumulation. Following current evidences, it is widely accepted that many asteroids would be "gravitational aggregates", i.e. bodies lacking internal cohesion. They could mainly be originated during the catastrophic disruption of some parent bodies, through the gravitational...

Context. The Gaia Data Release 1 (GDR1) is a first, important step on the path of evolution of astrometric accuracy towards a much improved situation. Although asteroids are not present in GDR1, this intermediate release already impacts asteroid astrometry.Aims. Our goal is to investigate how the GDR1 can change the approach to a few typical...

There have been attempts in the past to fit the observed bulk shapes (axial ratios) of asteroids to theoretical equilibrium figures for fluids, but these attempts have not been successful in many cases, evidently because asteroids are not fluid bodies. So far, however, the observed distribution of asteroid macroscopic shapes has never been...
