An approach to represent and analyze socioeconomic contexts as well as to reason with them, in order to extract useful conclusions about the social perception emerging from citizens' beliefs and feelings, is introduced. We concentrate here in the formal aspects of the solution, completing this way our work

The understanding and management of complex digital information on cities need the use of tools providing experts with new insights about the knowledge hidden within this great amount of data. In this paper a methodology to provide such a kind of knowledge is presented. This methodology is based on Formal Concept Analysis and allows...

This work presents a methodology for the generation of novel 3D objects resembling wireframes of building types. These result from the reconstruction of interpolated locations within the learnt distribution of variational autoencoders (VAEs), a deep generative machine learning model based on neural networks. The data set used features a scheme...

Urban Data management represents a major challenge in the field of Smart Cities. Its understanding is essential for the development of better smart services, which are a persistent demand in urban policies. From all the sources of data available, those that involve a collective processing of urban information (by the citizens or other...

The seismic retrofitting of reinforced concrete (RC) buildings has been widely analysed. Most of the solutions proposed are focused on the building's structure improvement. However, the effects of ground-improvement techniques combined with the building's structure-improvement techniques have not been usually analysed. Therefore, this paper...

Previous research has indicated that many European buildings are vulnerable to moderate-magnitude earthquakes. For example, during the L´Aquila (Italia, Mw 6.3, 2009) and Lorca (Spain, Mw 5.9, 2011) earthquakes, many old buildings were severely damaged and some of them collapsed. In specific, significant damage has been found in several school...

A project named PERSISTAH (Projetos de Escolas Resilientes aos SISmos no Território do Algarve e de Huelva, in Portuguese) is being developed. It aims to cooperatively assess the seismic vulnerability of primary schools of the Algarve (Portugal) and Huelva (Spain). Primary school buildings have been selected due to their low adult/child ratio...

The problems associated with numerous irregular buildings existing in Andalucia today, demands a new approach. In order to deepen the definition of strategies of urbano-territorial integration of these settlements, we present a case study in which, at the end of its implementation in agent-based simulation models, we summarize the ODD Protocol...

The computational burden needed to perform a fragility analysis of structures can be excessive and beyond the capability of regular computing systems. In this work, a Neural Network (NN) implementation is presented to make fragility analyses attainable. Neural Networks allow finding solutions to complex problems at a fraction of the...

The Iberian Peninsula is close to the Eurasia-Africa plate boundary resulting in a considerable seismic hazard. In fact, the southwestern Iberian Peninsula is affected by far away earthquakes of long-return period with large-very large magnitude. A project named PERSISTAH (Projetos de Escolas Resilientes aos SISmos no Território do Algarve e de...
