The measurement of the radiation and matching performance of millimeter-wave antennas is a very challenging topic. As a single antenna usually has a size of a few square millimeters, the feeding scheme can't be as simple as a connector, especially if high measurement accuracy is needed. That's why a microelectronic probe-feeding technique is a...

In this paper, we propose a fast method to measure the radiation characteristics of probe-fed circularly polarized antennas operating in Mm-wave bands. The axial ratio of such antennas can be computed in any particular space direction (θ,φ) from four measurement points in a very short time. It can be also given for the whole quasi-3D sphere in...

This paper demonstrates the integration of quadruple linearly-polarized microstrip grid array antennas in Ferro A6M low-temperature cofired ceramic technology for 60-GHz antenna-in-package (AiP) applications. An emphasis is given to the optimization of via transitions in the design of the low-loss array feeding network based on stripline...

In this letter, we propose a new method to compute the radiation and total efficiency of millimeter-wave probe-fed antennas. This hybrid method combines the measurement of the realized gain radiation pattern over a quasi-3-D sphere and the simulation values of this realized gain over the nonmeasured part of this sphere. To demonstrate the...

This paper presents a W-band on-chip elliptical slot antenna fabricated in the IBM CMOS8RF (0.13 μm) process. Improved antenna efficiency is achieved using a 400 μm quartz superstrate, which increases antenna gain from -5.7 dB to 0.5 dB. The superstrate-loaded antenna has a measured impedance bandwidth of 3.9% and an estimated efficiency of 26%.

In this communication, we present a new circularly-polarized array antenna using 2×2 linearly-polarized sub grid arrays in a low temperature co-fired ceramic technology for highly-integrated 60-GHz radio. The sub grid arrays are sequentially rotated and excited with a 90°-phase increment to radiate circularly-polarized waves. The feeding...

During recent years, various research teams have developed 60-GHz chipset solutions, using both BiCMOS and advanced CMOS technologies. However, for the 60-GHz market to flourish, not only low-cost RFICs are required, but also cheap antennas and package solutions. In order to address these two last issues, we present the design of a Tx-Rx...

In this paper, we present the design and realization of a miniaturized Butler matrix for 60 GHz applications. The matrix is realized using the IPD process from ST Microelectronics, Tours. Using new miniaturized branchline couplers and the IPD process, the Butler size is reduced by 90%. Simulation results show an insertion loss of 2.25 ± 0.95 dB...

This communication presents a 60-GHz circularly-polarized antenna-in-package in a low-temperature co-fired ceramic technology. It integrates 4 ×4 aperture-coupled corner-truncated microstrip patch antenna elements and their stripline feeding network as well as signal and ground traces for interconnection with the chip and board. The fabricated...
