Combined external and internal fixation for comminuted carpometacarpal fracture-dislocations: our experience

This article presents a case series of combined external and internal fixation for the surgical treatment of complex carpal fracture-dislocations. Eight patients were operated 3,3 (SD 3,9) days after the trauma and were followed-up for a mean of 12,1 (SD 4,7) months; the operative technique is presented. All the patients achieved good clinical, functional, and radiological outcomes. We had one case of initial complex regional pain syndrome, well resolved at 4 months after the surgery. The combination of external and internal fixation is a feasible and relatively easy method to manage complex carpometacarpal injuries. Proper indications are mandatory for a good outcome.
