El legado astigitano M. Vibio Marcelo y su muerte en Roma

Description

A Roman altar recently discovered in the impressive Vatican necropolis, next to the via Triumphalis in Rome, is dedicated to the memory of M. Vibius M.f. Marcellus, ambassador from Augusta Firma, a Roman colony in the province Baetica. This is the starting point for a brief analysis of the local embassies and their importance for the civic communities, as well as for the consideration of the individual buried in Rome, his social status and the circumstances of his journey as a legatus to the imperial capital, where he finally died.

Abstract

Un ara romana recientemente descubierta en la impresionante necrópolis Vaticana situada junto a la via Triumphalis, en Roma, recuerda la memoria de M. Vibius M.f. Marcellus, legado de la colonia Augusta Firma, en la Bética. Éste es el punto de partida para reflexionar brevemente sobre la importancia de las embajadas locales para las comunidades cívicas, así como sobre el personaje enterrado en Roma, su posición social y las características que pudieron rodear su viaje como legado a la capital del imperio, donde encontró la muerte.
