Soft-Start Capabilities of Battery Energy Storage Systems: Simulative Analysis of an Applicative Test-Case

Description

Power system restoration is usually achieved by means of diesel generators (DG) which energize the grid following a bottom-up approach. This work deals with the capability of a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to energize a large traditional power plant from blackout. The analysis is proposed taking into account overcurrent issues associated to the power transformer energization and asynchronous motor starting, which are often likely to impact on DC/AC converters causing possible protections interventions, so avoiding a successful soft start
