Description
The Macherin cemetery at Monéteau (Yonne) produced about sixty inhumation burials, as well as a few cremations, in three separate and different groups. Three forms of grave construction were identifi ed : the Balloy type, coffres and lighter constructions. Apart from the fi rst type, very much in the minority, these are reminiscent of the Alpine region and the Chamblandes-type graves. The fi nds associated with the burials refl ect the chronological and geographical position of the cemetery. The pottery is Chasséen or pre-Chasséen. The lithic industry is related to both the Chasséen (notably Chassey) and the Cerny. Ornaments mainly belong to the Cerny and Mittelneolithikum spheres. Initial results of a dating programme on the cemetery are homogeneous and underline the early position of the Chasséen at Monéteau, between 4400 and 4100 BC.
