Este trabajo describe y analiza algunos de los mecanismos utilizados por la Iglesia sevillana en la Baja Edad Media y primera Edad Moderna para mantener sus privilegios fiscales y económicos. La extensión del fuero a los colectivos con los que mantenían vínculos económicos ponía bajo el control de los jueces eclesiásticos a las personas y a las actividades que se realizaban. De esta forma, las instituciones eclesiásticas intentaron extender su jurisdicción a distintos colectivos seglares como forma de establecer lazos y clientelas reforzando su influencia social. La ciudad respondió defendiendo su jurisdicción y su capacidad impositiva para no ver mermados sus ingresos fiscales. La Corona actuó como árbitro en la disputa, ratificando los privilegios económicos de la Iglesia, pero también protegiendo a la ciudad de la intromisión de los jueces eclesiásticos en la jurisdicción real.

Abstract

This paper describes and analyses some of the mechanisms used by the Church of Seville in the Late Middle Ages and Early Modern Age to maintain its fiscal and economic privileges. The extension of the jurisdiction of the groups with whom the Church maintained economic ties put under the control of the ecclesiastical judges the persons and their activities. In this way, ecclesiastical institutions tried to extend their jurisdiction to different secular groups as a way of establishing bonds and clienteles, reinforcing their social influence. The city responded by defending its jurisdiction and its tax capacity to avoid the diminution of its tax revenues. The Crown acted as arbitrator in the dispute, ratifying the economic privileges of the Church, but also protecting the City from the meddling of ecclesiastical judges in the royal jurisdiction.
