Description
This study explores the existence of a central nucleus in cognitive mapping through the approach of the anchoring and objectivation process of representations. Thus, it is not the geographical object that contributes to qualify and organize the spatial representation but rather the socio-cognitive processes of categorization. The carrying out of analyzes of similarity on the basis of hierarchized associations of places makes it possible to describe five representations of the urban space in our sample. They are differentiated by their spatial reference points, which are even closely related to the social position (capital) and trajectory (socialization) of individuals. Spatial cognition schemes are revealed as social provisions in a system of social relations and emphasize the importance of understanding cognitive mapping as true social representations.
