El legado del funcionalismo: limitaciones teóricas y excesos etnográficos

En la historia de la antropología la corriente funcionalista y posteriormente estructural-funcionalista marca un hito en el desarrollo de la antropología moderna. Con frecuencia se obvia que la calidad descriptiva de las monografías funcionalistas y otras aportaciones pioneras que anuncian corrientes posteriores han quedado oscurecidas por la crítica al débil aparato teórico funcionalista, inspirado en la sociología y la teoría política. A partir del forcejeo que realizan entre teoría y conocimientos etnográficos, proporcionando un excedente de información etnográfica que no se explica, planteamos que las contribuciones de los autores funcionalistas continúan influenciando, teórica y metodológicamente, a la antropología social.

Abstract

In the history of anthropology the functionalist school and later structural-functionalist marks a milestone in the development of modern anthropology. Often it is obviated that the descriptive quality of functionalist monographs and other pioneering contributions which announcing later currents have been obscured by the criticism of weak functionalist theoretical apparatus, inspired by sociology and political theory. Since they do the struggle between theory and ethnographic knowledge, providing a surplus of ethnographic information that is not explained, we propose that the contributions of functionalist authors continue to influence, theoretical and methodological, social anthropology.
