ANNUAL MAXIMUM AND PARTIAL DURATION SERIES IN EXTREME RAINFALL FREQUENCY ANALYSIS

Description

The main focus of the present study is to compare the use of Partial Duration Series (PDS) and the Annual Maximum Series (AMS) in extreme rainfall frequency analysis. The Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) and Generalized Pareto (GP) distributions are used to fit AMS and PDS, respectively. At this aim, the 1-minute rainfall data series collected at Villa Cambiaso (Genoa, Italy) between 1990 and 2014 has been used. The influence of threshold value to select PDS from the rainfall data series is examined based on Anderson-Darling test. The PDS-GP model provides higher estimates of intensity for short duration when compared with the AMS-GEV model due to the inclusion of more extreme events.
