Description

The parties in Charles IV's honour were the last ones celebrated following the pattern inherited from the Baroque. In 1789 there were unequivocal/ unambiguous signs revealing that that festive model and iconographic order were going out of use in favour of an enlightened approach. The engravings and narrations of the celebrations are a discourse of power in the hands of the authorities aiming to modify the traditionalist image of their city.

Abstract

Las fiestas en honor a Carlos IV serán en Sevilla las últimas que se celebren según el esquema heredado del Barroco. En 1789 hay signos inequívocos de que ese modelo festivo y ese orden iconográfico están perdiendo vigencia en favor de un planteamiento ilustrado. Los grabados y las narraciones de las celebraciones son discursos de poder en manos de las autoridades que aspiran a modificar la imagen tradicionalista de su ciudad.
