La Década del Cerebro (1990-2000): algunas aportaciones

Este trabajo presenta una reflexión relacionada con los cambios intelectuales, tecnológicos, políticos y sociales durante la Década del Cerebro: 1990-2000, y su impacto en las vidas y conquistas de los neurocientíficos clínicos. El proyecto Década del Cerebro fue una iniciativa patrocinada por la Biblioteca del Congreso (LC) y el Instituto Nacional de Salud Mental (NIMH) de los Estados Unidos. Aquí se analizan algunos de los avances más significativos en las siguientes áreas: cerebro-conducta; neuroanatomía y neuroimagen; genética; neurobiología del desarrollo; neurotransmisores, receptores y citoquinas; neurología reconstructiva; Alzheimer y otras enfermedades neurodegenerativas; trastornos psiquiátricos y otras enfermedades neurológicas. Para finalizar, se realiza un balance global del Proyecto Década del Cerebro con sus principales aportaciones.

Abstract

This paper is a rehearsal regarding the intellectual, technological, political, and social breakthroughs that have occurred during the Decade of the Brain: 1990 to 2000, and its impact on clinical neuroscientists lives and accomplishments achieved. The Congressional Library (CL) and the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) of the United States promoted the Decade of the Brain project. Here we conduct an analysis upon the most important hallmarks achieved within the several neuroscience fields: the brain-behaviour relationship, neuroanatomy and brain imaging, developmental neurobiology, neurotransmitters, receptors and cytokines, reconstructive neurology, Alzheimer and other neurodegenerative diseases, psychiatric disorders, and other neurological conditions. At last, we assess the overall success of this project.
